( My brief in vandag se Pretoria News )
Any plan to improve public transport should be welcomed. If surveys are needed to determine the needs of commuters to ensure the best possible transport system, as was reported in the Pretoria News of 30 May, they must be supported. My appeal to residents is to be generous with their proposals and input - it is their needs after all that need to be addressed and this will only be possible with adequate information.
Plans informed by information collected through surveys will however, only be of value if implemented correctly. A concern in this regard is that the Tshwane Metro did similar surveys before. The most recent survey, if my memory serves me correctly, was conducted by the CSIR and to this day I cannot say what positive changes it brought about.
The situation with the Tshwane bus service is desperate. As a DA member serving on the Tshwane transport oversight committee, I receive calls almost daily from frustrated commuters from all over the city. I am cautiously exited about the survey to enable the Tshwane Metro to offer an effective public transport service.
