(My letter in Pretoria News)
Political vultures deprived the vulnerable from kindness at a time when goodwill usually prevails. Where is the ANC of yesteryear who championed a better life for all?
Taking R40 million rand from the Lotto to fund the World Youth and Student Festival (Read ANC bash) is loathsome. These are trying times for charitable organisations attempting to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. These organisations rely on donations from the National Lottery.
A sense of community is needed to keep society together. If my neighbour goes to bed hungry I cannot have a good night’s rest. Just how self-righteous can the ANC still become? The ANC clearly lost touch with the people at grassroots level.
Although the ANC liberated the people, ironically, the masses now need to be rescued from their liberators, who became self obsessed and arrogant. Are we still a caring society? The government certainly don’t care anymore. To take so much money for a dubious event is to disregard South Africans from all walks of life. They who give generously will ask themselves in future why they should bother to continue. They who are supposed to benefit from the lottery are shamefully betrayed.
All we can hope for is that when the up-and-coming leaders of the ruling party consume high volumes of beverages and decadent cuisine at the Youth Festival they will spare a thought for the less privileged. Expecting anything more from them is like playing the lottery with your chances less than one in a million.
